1. The Djilas Affair
a. The Dpilas purge has not (in my estimation) served the Communist hier-
archy c ' Yugoslavia to a good advantage. The population
has long desired less ' rigid Communist control; elimination of 25X1

of Yugoslavia, many opinions (mixed reactions) were expressed.

Some reasoned that the Communist Party intended to relax its
stringent controls
Others stated that D jilsa ? statements reflected the typical self
criticism which is often employed by the party in order to point
up the fact that it is not infallible and is subject to human
error.
The more idealistic ones felt that Tito was concerned with the
welfare of the total population of Yugoslavia. .
