The Subcommittee notes a material. increase in the gu+entity of statistics in its field published by official 3ov H1oc sources. It is hailed that caretti]. study and evaluation of these additional sources may result in the improveaaeat of knowledge of production and imrentory oP many iaclustrial machinery items which are basic to the national econot~r. a. The Subcammi.ttee ccx~pleted preparation of its report of priority research deficiencies in FY 1957? At the year's end the Subcc~i.ttee is pleaded to note that significant progress l~aa been made toward closing any of the indicated gaps. Progress to date and plans for FY 195$ pointed toward further activity in this direction are contained in the attached Annex A. It should be recalled, however, that agency research effort currently avai?able for basic study in the field of industrial msschiaery and equipment is limited principally to GIA, owing to changes oP ealphssis in the work of other agencies formerly active in this field. 3. Review of Substantive Payers s. The Subcommittee ].imtted its review of substantive work during the yeat? to the Air Force external economic research project, Planning Study of Soviet Heavy Machine Buihding Industries Phase I of which was completed in early 1957 at the University of North Carolina,. At various meetings the progress of this work, Sts methodology, proposed utilization, and probable utility were discussed .extensively, with the valuable assistance and cooperation of representatives of the Air Force who are knowledgeable in the sub3ect. It is proposed to review Phase I carefully at sn early nesting. b. In FY 1958 it is proposed also to review othPx significant substantive products in the Subcommittee's field. Currently two studies are being considered tos such review: (1) GIA f RR PR-161, Trends in Aut~tion 1n ~.}~e Fta published 31 May 1957? {2) CIA/ORR Pra~ect No. 34.501, Production of Metalforoing Equipo~nt in the tT88R (not yet published) . ~+~ Review of Proposals for ~ternsl Research The subcommittee was not called upon to review ps~poaals formally involvix~ external research. It is understood that final conclusions are that insufficient value would be derived fx+o~a this project to justify its initiation. 50 Nhintenance of Agreed Basic Statistics Ia view of procedure]. chatages instituted by the Air Force with respect to commodity categories in the industri8l machinery wad equipment field, under which the Air Force will make use o! CIA pro- duction estimates in its future Air Targets Study, the Subeao~ittee did not engage 1n extensive work on agreed estimates. 5. The Subco?aittee's evalueetions and suggestions regarding prrocedure and itineraries were approved by the IAC Standing Comiai.ttee with minor modifications. 9. Evaluation of the Role o! the Subcommittee s. It ie felt the Subco?mittee has effective]y realized its poteatia,l during the past year, owing in large part to the active interest, participation and cooperation of the representatives or all the participating agencies. Because o! the character of emphasis ewrrantly in the research effort o! the various partici- pating agencies, a higk- level of Subcommittee activity was not as essential in FY 157 as in previous years, b. There are no outstanding administrative problems presently is4P~~6 '~ Subccx~ittee. However, it is felt that puprticipation by the Department of the Navy, through addition to th:e:membership of a representative of oNT, would materially enhance tla3 Subee~n- avittee's capability wad usefulness.
