Political Outlook in West Germany,
dated 17 April 1956
The following postmortem on NIE 23-56, "Political Outlook
in West Germany," which was noted by the IAC on 17 April 1956,
is circulated for information and appropriate action:
There were no major factual deficiencies with
respect to West Germany, and the estimative problem--
as in most Western European countries--was primarily
one of analysis. We believe, however, that it would be
helpful if more information were available concerning
the role played by industrial and financial interests in
(a) influencing national policy, particularly regarding
foreign trade, rearmament, reunification, and policy
toward the East, and (b) financing and influencing the
political parties.
