SUPPLEMENT
1. Well?-infos bd circles believe that there is a strong possibility that
Tsaidaris will ream., -ootavithst ding his prior adamant position :rich
has been supported by .the Britisho
20 Ire nimalos and Sophou.lis have achiu ed 6 working agreement regarding their
participation in a coalition government excluding the RAM and M.
aelloprx-.loa, chief of the National Unionist Party, and Papadreou,9
chief of the Democratic Socialist P `;,y'o have agreed to the basis of
participat i.on.
T. Disaaasaions are being hold with. Populist Party leaders regarding the b?tsis
of a coalition. An attempted compromise by the Populist Party involving
the relinquish ent of the Premier chip and the Ministry of Public, Security
with retention of the Ministries of War and Navy was rejected by Venizelorrs
and Sophoulisa
There is a strong possibility of a compromise based on Tsaldarie resigning
with the Populist Party retaining the Premiership, which would be hold by
a more moderate right-wing percionality approved by the Opposition. The
Populist Party would also keep the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Navy
but would relinquish the Ministries of War, Public Security, and Eoononr.
bo In a meeting on 4 January with Venizelos, General Crawford, chief of
British 1.,.d Forces in Greeoe, sought his influence for acceptance of
the oou promise reef erred to in paragraph 3 above
.
6, Con'rirnued, unpublicized, sporadic but wall-or mir d hostilities in the
Southern Peloponnese together with a marked increase in retaliatory
killings in Athens and its sub u,rbs is an important factor In seriously
es :enirag time Governn.ent;:Ps position and is apparently compelling the
British to modify their prior oomplete support of Tealderia.
25X1A6a G : It 6- yes not seem likely that any change Is
possible until after Parliament reconvenes
on 16 . aanuary. The compromise mentioned in
paragraph 4 above as anomalous, but it may
ord a vote of confidence against the
CONIDENT rnment, by the party in control of Parliament.
