OFFICIALS ONLY CONFIDENTIAL CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE GROUP INTELLIGENCE REPORT COUINTRY Yugoslavia SUPJECT Military Activity in the Bitolj Area ORIGIN DATE: DIST. September 19415 PAGES SUPPLEMENT 1. on 5 June 1947, one brigade of the Yugoslav 3rd Armored Division mod to Bitolj from Prilep. The following vehicles were counted as they entered Bitolj: a. 12 heavy tanks Joseph Stalin type; round turret with one long barrelled gun (caliber unspecified), broad and squat. Khaki-colored paint recently applied. b. 24 armored cars One ('I) turret, with gun 1.66 meters long (caliber unspecified), a. 25 troop-carriers Open trucks, with armored sides. Each truck carried 12 soldiers with their equip- ment, and one heavy mortar (caliber un- specified). All the trucks and vehicles had a red star on either side, with the colors of the Yugoslav flag (sic) and a small star to the rear. 2. On 9 June, about five large (unspecified) caliber guns arrived at B?tolj coming by road from Prilep. These guns were towed by tractors. On 10 June, the same guns were moved to previously prepared concrete and rock emplacements, in the hills between Dobroveni and Skocivir, facing tgwards Greece. After the guns had been moved into position, the tractors 1githdrew to Dobroveni. 3. Additional fortifications in the zone between Medzedli and Kajmakcalan, which had been under construction for two months, were completed by -early June. Trenches have been dug, and machine-gun emplacements construct-Td of reinforced concrete. Every group, composed of three such emplacemea"bs, is protected by barbed wire and mines thirty yards in front of it.. Anti-aircraft guns, mostly of 20 rmn. light caliber type, have been placed in rook and concrete emplacements in thevillages of Medzedli, Dobroveni, Skooivh , Bao and Brod. Ammunition pits, measuring 3.5 by four by two meters, have been dug near the emplacements. Supplies and ammunition are brought up by two trains a day from Bitolj to Kenali, and are distributed from Kenali by truck. CONFIDENTIAL CLASSIFICATION ..+ ` CONTROL U. S.
