L. The second basic class at the highest SEd school, the Karl Marx School,
located at Lleben lde/Sieburg (Brandenburg), extended from January through
July 1947. As indicated previously,, some students will stay up to two years
at the school; the first formal two-year course for party functionaries was
rc!heduled to start 1 October 1947. Entrance requirements for this long
course include prior attendance at. Kress or Land schools or, a rastery of the
i:aterial covered by those schools. The two-year course is supposed to be

Up to the present, the faculty at Liebenwalde has consisted of twelve regular
instructors who have all attended schools as well as teacher training insti-
tutes in Russia. These are in charge of the various seminars. In addition,
-there are numerous assistants: former students who did well and were selected
to stay at Liebenwalde. Many of these have now passed their teachers' examin-
ations and will serve as full instructors in the two-year course. In addition,
SED Central Secretariat personnel, including Pieck, Grotewohl, and Ulbricht,
have lectured at Liebenwalde and have participated in discussion groups. The
r-.h lef SEA} representative. however, has been Anton Ackermann, who is in charge
of the Press, Recruiting, and Indoctrination Department in the Central Secre--
t sat, Russians as such have never appeared as lecturers or instructors in
the school.
The half-year courses will continue at Liebenwalde, but only as special courses
for high party officials. The course for journalists will also be continued
at that school.

in philosophy, history, economics, and government. The study of a foreign
