THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION FOR THE RESEARCH USE OF TRAINED INTELLIGENCE ANALYSTS 50X1-HUM rtoauction Plana for the Coal Industry in 19L8 a. Capital destined to be invested in industry in 1948 amounts to 66,120,279,000 si. (i.e. one-third of the total capital Invest- ment plans of the budget). Out of these 66 billion sl., 27 bil- lion are to be supp31ied by the State. The fact that 13,300,000,000 al. out of the total industrial invectnent of 66 odd billion zl. are destined for ttte coal industry, shows that the latter is warded as the key industry which guarantees the development of other branches of industry. b. As the coal target for 1947 - 57,5001000 tons - was fully achieved and there use even anexoeas of 1,625,675 tons, it ray be assumed that the 1948 target laid down as 67,500,000 tons will also be reached. c. The coal industry comprises 77 active hard coal mines, it coke plants, 4 brickette plants, 36 active power plants and 120 auxiliary producion plants. 250 plants employ 295,000 workers. There are two difficult:lrr in achieving the taryetss the problem of ran pour and equipment. d. For the last few months of 1947 the average extraction of coal per math was 5,300,000 tons, which yields an annual ratio of about 63,000,000 toxi&. The target for 1949 has been laid down as 67s,5001,000 tone, and it is reasonable to believe that this aim will be achieved. Thus 98% of pve war, 1938, extraction should be accorplished (the fi'srs for 1938 wan 6911058,000 tons). 2. i = Coal Ext otien Plan for L U There are nine brown coal nines, and pleas have been reds for the extraction of 4,200,000 tons. In view of the fact that the caloric value of brown ocal. is very low, plans are bein- made for large scale development of chemical r- dustry based on extraction from brown coal, such as the production of certain types of coke, gas, oils, lubricants, paraffin, fuel oils, eta. 3. Coke Production - Seventy-five percent of pro-var figures were aehievod in 1947 and it is hojxd that 3 million tons of coke will be produced in the 11 coke plants durin/t 1948
