British and American radio broadcasts are listened to'considerably
in the Leningrad area, although with great prudence. The London
broadcasts are criticized on the grounds that they are lacking in
positive propaganda. The American programsE are consistently
jammed, much more so than the British.
2. There is now no shortage of radio sets capable of picking up
British and American programs, and no restriction on their
purchase by private individuals. Six-, eight-, and thirteen-tube
sets have been mass-produced and are in good supply in the shops
at prices ranging from about 1,500 to 2,300 rubles. However,
comparatively few persons can afford these prices, and such sets
are normally purchased by Stakhanovites, well-placed Party
members, engineers, and technicians.
