A high-ranking Soviet army officer sits the University once a month to make an inspection and to deliver lectures. N 6. There are six department heads and approximately fifty professors at the University. Most of the professors and department bonds are Soviet Koreans from the Kazakh S.S.R., and their real names are kept secret. All the department heads are important North Korean Labor Party members and, along with the professors, have been highly recommended for their positions by labor Tarty leaders. 7. There are approximately fifty instructors who assist thss professors in the performance of their duties. Almost all the instructors were. formerly toachers in Korean middle schools. 8. In October 1947, a department head received a monthly salary of 2500 (old) won, a professor 2000, and an instructor 1700. However, because of the steep rise in commodity prices, in November 1947 the department beadle salary was raised to 4000 (old) won, that of the professor to 3200 and that of the instructor to 2800. In addition, the heads of the departments, the professors and the instructors vrG issued. rice, clothing and other necessities and are supplied free transportation to and from the University, 9. There are approximately 8000 students at the University.* Tuition to free and the students are even given a small living allowance. The students can be divided into two main groups: those from North and South Fiam yong (Kankyo) frovinces and those from North and South Pyonn. (Rei.an) Provinces. The students from North and South Ramgyong Provinces constutute 70 per cent of the entire student body, appear to be very satisfied with the treatment the, receive and are considered pro-Soviet by the University authorities.' Because of the proximity of North and South Aangyong to the USSR, many of the people In these provinces can speak Russian and are considered pro-Soviet by most Korean people, The students from North and South Pyongan Provinces seem unhappy and many have left the University and gone to South Korea. 25X1 Comment; 14000 students at the University in 25X1 September 1947.) 10. Approximately 5000 students live in the two dormitories on the University grounds. Most of these students are ardent Communists and were selected by the Labor Tarty to study at the University. The remaining 3000 students live outside the Unive:'- city, but under close surveillance; most of them are members of families that were formerly very wealthy. 11. Certain students at the University have been selected by the North Korean Ooverzonertt authorities to report on the activities and political sentiments of all the i emhere of the student body. 12. In September 1946, when the University was founded, students between the aeas of 17 and 35 were admitted to the University. However, in 1947, applicarts over the age of 30 were not accepted. 13. Every student at the University must carry an identification card issued by the department in which he is enrolled. Students of the University cannot be arrested by the city authorities for minor Infractions of the law. Their names must be reported to the University'}authorities who deal with them accordingly. 14.
