A Congress of Physicists took place at ":arsaw from 6 to 9 "ay 1945. It was convened by the Polish tiasociation of Physics (Polskie Towarzvstno Fi zyczrie) . Phvsicis is fro; :arsarr, Gdansk' G] irk ce, Krakov:, Lul'lin, Lodz, Torun, and ::roclaw attended the Congress. b. Daring tnc proceedings a report was made to the assembly on the development of atomic research in Poland. In particular, some twenty original scientific treatises v:cre discussed, the beat work- having been that of Prof. Pienkovrski on atomic piles and of Prof. Sosnowski'on isotopic indicators (in katorv izotep we). Prof. Soltan established at this Congress the fact that practical tror?c by Polish scientists on atomic energy had not vet started. This was due to lack of necessary equip.-tent, and installations in scientific research establishments. 50X1-HUM e. ,The folio, ir>g scientists have been appointed to work on this eqit' nentr DATE DISTR. 19 August 1948 NO. Prof. Soltan further went on to say that Polish scientists hoped to produce results in nuclear physics in 1P49' since in ten nonths' time the requir50X1-HUM apparatus (Cockcroft) would arrive and the van re (hraai apparatus ioing nanufactured in Poland would also he ready by then. Both apparatuses are needed to produce high tension and to accelerate the irons. The first stares of construction a farce cyclotron for the same work have been started at the Institute of Experimental Physics in a larre hall built esneeially for this purpose. Twenty scientists who worked on auto c ener&y during the German occupation are now engaged in atomic research at the Institute. Professors Sosnowski and Soltan, nentioned above, are reputed to extremely able. The cyclotron now in course of construction and the high tension hall at the Institute are located in the new builc?ings'as shown in section A of the sketch below.
