? ?. An officer of the Yugoslav Arty stationed at Portorose reported the Army
to be in poor condition. It lacks clothing, arms, ammunition and spare
parts. , eapons are not uniform and there is a lack of ammunition iyWLch
allows only a few hours of firing practice in training courses. Inforq, ant
thinks that the Yugoslav Army is completely demoralized and would not tight
if American tanks or a determined Italian Army opposed it. He attributes
this to the lord service without leave forced upon the enlisted men, poor
pay and poor treatment. A recent cause of further discontent has been the
non-fraternization rule recently established between officers and enlisted
men and the privileged position of the former.
2. A small ammunition dump is located at the For torose end of the former
railway tunnel which comes out above the town. The dump conta:l '75 mm.
shells, TNT and small arms a immi.tion. It is lightly guarded.
3. No rocket launching sites were observed in the Portorose area. The only
platforms seen were anti-aircraft artillery emplacements at Antigmana.
l Source reports that in the Punta Rocco region, near the Sanctuary of the
Madonna, army units conduct defense against imaginary enery sea 1andirtgs
daily. Their equipment includes machine guns and some trench pieces.
