Colonel Simatoepang, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Tentara Nasional
Indonesia(TITI), made the follo:iin statements concernin~,, the d forces
of the Indonesian Republica
The present strength of the TIJI is 250,000. It is r-:lanned to reduce this
force to 150,000 as it is impossible to train, feed and clothe r larger
number. The Jute ii refusal to allow demobilized tr.;ops to return to their
villages in Last and ';nest Java has caused unrest among them.
2. The food supply per man averages 1300 calories a day. any of the troops
are clothed only in gunny sacks.
3. The original disciplined strength of the. TNI is more than able to handle
the armed forces of the Partai Koaaunis Indonesia(PKI).. TNI officers from
Lieut. General Soedirman down to battalion eo:r;:_.anders have pledged loyalty
to .
