1? IG Farbenindustrie, Bitterfeld, receives 300 tons of round graphite electrodes
monthly from Siemens-Plania, Lichtenberg, which is at present its only source for this
item.
2. Wastage accounts for appaoximately 25% of the amount received. One half of the
remainder is made into round electrodes of 250mm to 300mm diameter and is sent
to various factories in the Soviet Zone, with notification that the consignment
is by order of Siemens-Plania. 50X1-HUM
Comment: Although it is sometimes state that graphite
is returned to Siemens-Plania for forwarding the above is
the actual prodedure.)
3. During May 1948 the recipients, via Siemens-Plania or direct, were:
Maximilianhttte, Unterwellenborn
Schaeffer & Budenberg, Magdeburg
Krupp-Gruson, Magdeburg
Kuntsch, Crossen
Bunawer4, Schkopau.
4. The other half of the graphite received from Siemens-Plania is used for electrolytic
purposes at Bitterfeld itself, or shipped on reparations account on behalf of IG
Fabenindustrie, Bitterfeld, to the Sovietoauthorities who undertake distribution
at Weissensee.
5. Werk SUd produces 48 tons of colloid graphite per annum on reparations account.
There are 22 furnaces for graphite in Werk Sttd, including a small experimental
furnace and thirteen furnaces which produce graphite electrodes. Four additional
furnaces are ready for the production of a further 100 to 150 tons monthly, but
they are not in use because Siemens-Plania has been unable to furnish the necessary
graphite electrodes. These should be rectangular electrodes, roughly 250mm x 250mm
x 300mm.
6. Prominent Soviet civilians supervising production at Bitterfeld are:
a. Dr. Belayev - Chemist, 147ctor General of Elektrotechnisches Kombinat, Bitterfeld.
