Source reoorta that all former soldiers with the rank of Unteroffiaier or
bither are being disehar ed free the police in Thuringia in compliance with
S=.A Order #240. The sane applies to pre-'1945 menbers_of the police force
and to former members of the SPD. They are being replaced by persons loyal
to the -CM; some of these have been drafted from factories on the recortnda-
tion of the FDGB or SW,, others have been supplied b-r the FDS.
2. In :leininr en the city barracks (for?:srly the barracks of the 32nd Infantry
Regnent) are boina used to house and train the netr recr-iits. Pay-rates are
high; a llauptwachtrtaister, for exar~rle, receives625 :iarks per month. All
policeren receive ration card #1 plus a heal tsorkers' bonus. As far as pos-
sible the police are bein; quartered in barracks and fed in nesshalls. Dis-
cirline is severe.
3. According to source the Thuringian border is guarded by fixed, two-nan rosts
of G?)r--An Border Police connected by Russian roving; ; t trola. He clairs the
Russian patrols are afraid and do not venture out after dark. The Border
Police search border crossers chiefly for Deutsche Mar'_kc.

4. Source reports the followin personnel chan^-es in the Thuringian Police:
a. Rudi Bausch, forcer rolice president disr..ssed in the recent sumo, has
fled from his home and is being souryht by the police. F!o has been succeeded
by his deputy, Klainjung.
b. Hermann Geissler, head of the cri final police, has been disohargcd because
of sickness. Source a^aur-ee that Geissler tsar, roroved bas-use of incompe-
tence, but exprosvs the belief that Geissler has rrobab:Iy received a secret
assimnment from the :'ED.

a. Ernst Braun, head of the Schutzpolizei, has also been relieved. Source
suggests that Braun has been given a new aaeigtrient, possibly in Saarbruc!sen.
d. Rassmann, >oliee chief in Xreis MeininRen, has been replaced by Grzan.
Grzan spent several year's in Buchenwald for BPD activity, became head of
the Peroonne. Section in the Weimar Police after 1945, and enjoyed the
favor of Ernst Braun.
e. The entire flaculty of the Erfurt Police School has been replaced ter reliable
Communists. The fbrmer director, Oberreglerurjgarat Riehe.d ttetzer, is now
director of the Erflirt Civic Rospital. Police Captain Halter Schacht has
been given a position In the postal service. The only officer allowed to
remain on the fac 1t%y is Lt. Ferdinand Pohl, who had not been in the police
eerzriae prior to 1945.
