On 1 August 1948 Dr. Leonid Voronine had a total of 96 baboons and Tota
monkeys in cages at the De3amacht Balcha,Uiosrital in Addis Ababa. These
animals were all that survived out of a lot of approximately one hundred
and fifty which had been collected by Dmitri Pavlov., a Bulgarian hunter.
Although Pavlov stated that some r.Iandrilie were included in the collection,
informant maintains that the animals were baboons Genus rio, Erx1eben)
and Tota monkeys (Genus LasLomm, huger) . n The nandrill25X1 A6a
does not inhabit Ethiopia, but there is a ribbed-faced baboon which bears
a superficial resemblance to the mandrill) The majority of the specimens
were nature baboons.
2. The primates were shipped by rail to Djibouti and on 24 August were placed
aboard the KI'ARKW. The ship stayed outside the port for three days, and
during this time eight of the specimens died. The KHARKOV then went to
Aden and remained there for three weeks., By the end of this period over
hat of the retaining animals had died.
3. Before he left Ethiopia Dr. Voronine commissioned Pavlov to collect an
additional 100 specimens, and Pavlov is now working on thi, as _ess3 sent,
