The most important Sudanese newspapers (all of which are printed in Arabic),
their Ownership and political affiliations are as folloross
a. AI-Nil, a daily, which was first published in 19350 is the oldest
newspaper in the Sudan. It has become the organ of the wealthiest,
pro-government elements in that country, as the Printing and
Publishing Company, which owns the paper, is controlled principally
by the ?ahdi fanny; flustafa Abu a]rlla, the foremost Sudanese
Merchant; and a. Contomichalos, the principal Greek merchant
in the Sudan. Although the paper is not the official organ
of the Untma Party, it supports the policies of the Tiahdi family
and the Independence Front. Al-Nil opposes the unionist parties
and often engages in controverssies with 'Abdullah nirghanios
Saint al-Sudan,
b.. A1,4J a a daily, and the official organ of the Urea Party,
o en a tacks Egypt on the issue of Sudan's independence.
It is financed by the Party and,, along with al-Nil, Campaigns,
against the unionist parties.
Sudan al-Gadid, started in 1943 as tho first political weekly
Ax-i Meauaaa, in 191+6 became a daily. Because, of its capable
editorial staff, the paper has played an important part in
shaping political and social opinion in the Sudan. Officially,
the paper supports no particular sect or party; actually,it
usually supports the Independence Front.,
d. Al-Rai-al-Ai established in 19115, already has the widest
aulation in the Sudan and has gained the reputation of
being the country's most reliable newspaper. The o hers and
editors of the paper follow a course of political moderation.
Although the principal owner and editor of the paper, Ismail Atabani,
a prominent mother of the Unionist Party, and although the
nists take an active part in guiding its policies, the
apex continues to maintain an independent outlook, It often
impartially criticizes the Sudan Govornmont and attacks the
Ashiqqa Party as we31.

It was started In 191a and gradually became the chief eospanent
of the unionist canoes although., officially, it is not the organ
of the Kbatmia. The papers therefore, is strong anti-British
and advocates union with Egypt. It often engages in bitter
controversies with the Una Party paper, wait-Sudan is also an
outstanding and provocative critic of the go E. 1though
MirghArki, and other leading Khat nia- members have suggested that
the paper follow a moderate course't the editorial staff frequently
capitalises on the feelings of the people and sty popular
political and M119LOUs eentimenrts. Because of its mil, the
paper occasionally replaces alr-Rai-al-Amon as the most wider
circulated per in the 1 udan.
fo Al Ashi a, a daily, which began publication on 22 March 1948
as an organ of the Ashic qa Party, claimed a circulation of
lO,oOO. However, the paper gained a reputation for being
unreliablea It was financed mainly by wealthy members of then
Ashigga Pal r. In August 1948 it waa announced that al-A a
mould stop publication teuporarily, because of "certau E~~ca1.
difficulties," It was printed by the Sudanese Printer.
