REPORT NO.
1. The locomotive works at Grivita employs some 2,500 workers while the oar
shops have about 2,000 worker 4. There is a small bronze foundry
attached to the workshops. '
2. In all there are around 400 machine tools and 16 forges with capacities of up to
1,500 kilograms. The machine tools are modern but arc now showing signs
of wear after heavy use during and since the war. The result is that
tolerances which should be of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 mm. are now at least
0.5 M.
So An undue strain is put on these machines by the varying har1nesa of the rolled
materials supplied by Resi7a.
4. There have been repeated requests for replacements for a number of machines
but so far the only one3 received have been six boiler-tube machines
from Czechoslovakia. These latter have not come up to the expected
precision roquired.
SA Heavy castings and pressed parts are delivered by Mesita, Farola and
Laromet and are finished at Grivita.
S. The monthly output for oonpleto and general overhauling of locomotives is
27 and for cars 100. Grivia had turned out 36 locomotives per month
before the war.
7. There is a surplus of 600 locomotives owing to reduced traffic. These
have been cannibalized to such an extent, because of the shortage of
spare parts and to keep up production, that only some
four to five percent of these wo-ild be available if suddenly required.
8. In addition, there are about 200 locomotives of "type'150,000" which were
brought to Rumania by the Soviets for complete overhaul in April 1948. The
Soviets have stopped the final work for minor technical reasons, and
the locomotives are being kept, in reserve for emergencies
STATE
ARMY,,
as they are scattered throughout the country.
