z,1-AS` IFiCAT10N 25X1 A Approved For Rel@q2-0045 COUNTRY Argentina ' ENTIAL DATE DISTR. ' "ar 1949 SUBJECT Possible Change in Argentina Immigration Policy NO. OF PAGES I PLACE 25X1 A ACQUIRED (ULED BELOW DATE OF INF SUPPLEME 25X1 X REPORT NO. 1. A new immigration policy is under consideration by Argentine authorities Which would place a ban on the irsnigration of nationals of the Baltic countries, Rumania, and Hungary, as well as of all Slavs.* The new policy, however, will permit and encourage immigration from western Germany. 2. A possible result of this policy would be the replacement of Pablo Diana as general director of immigration by an army colonel who is as yet unidentified.** Branko Benton, Count Gino Monti de Valsassina and Ciril Cudina, who have been active in flay immigration matters, are reported to be considerably alarmed over Diana's possible replacement. Benton, who Is employed by the Argentine immigra- tion department, exerts a great deal of influence over Diana on Groat immigration matters and is working closely with Father Stjepan Drar-anovich, the Croat priest who has been actively pushing Groat immigration to Argentina. If the new immigra- tion policy is put into effect and Diana is ousted, it is believed that Benton would lose much of his present influence over Argentine immigration with regard to Slave. 25X1A 25X1A Comments As previously reported in - a ban is now being im-~ posed by Argentine authorities on the immigration of fl.av displaced persons to Argentina. 25X1A * gaunt0 The press has reported that Colonel Enrique P. Gonzalez has been appointed the general director of immigration in Argentina. ------------ This document is hereby regraded to CONFIDr N;1AL in accord=ance With the letter of 16 Octocer 1973 from the Director of Central lnteil;genre to the Archivist of the United States.
