The finances of the Cornunist Party of Uruguay (CPU) are reported to be in a very
bad state. As a result, emphasis has been placed upon obtaining new contributors
rather than new members, in order to finance a propaganda campaign against
"Yankee imperialism".
2. A collection has already begun to finance the national Congress of the Party
to be held in Ibntevideo from 16-18 June 1949.
o Not only is the CPU in a bad financial situation, but it ist disorganized because
its files were destroyed at the time of the Trocadero incident on 9 October 1948*
to prevent any of its mmbers then under investigation from being compromised.
CPU has been unable to renew annual membership cards as it has done in the past.
It is further reported that Hector Rodriguez, Alberto uarez and Enrique Rodriguez,
national executive committee members of the CPU, have not yet regained the prestige
which they lost as a result of the criticism of their activities by Eugenio Gomez
in a report to the CPU on 8 December 1948.** They are being given a last chance,
however, and no fundamental changes in Party direction are contemplated before the
National Congress in June.
