SUPPLEMENT TO
1. Numerous reports emanating from the Soviet satellite states describe the mas,-
thg of troops along the Yugoslav border,, but reliable estimates of the stren g--;
th of the Cominform legions are so far unavailable. Special anti-Tito Udvolun-
teerl" brigades have been set up in Bulgaria, Rumania, and Hungary, with the
major portion of the force being stationed in the latter country. Some sort
of a headquarters has been established in Debrecen and some barracks near the
South Station in Budapest have been made available exclusively for these troops.
2. The Cominform is exerting further pressure on Yugoslavia by lending support to
the Macedonian nationalist movement. A legion of ?Iacedonian partisans is to
be organized in western Bulgaria with the assistance of Soviet Army instructors.
Reports have also been received concerning the calling of a Macedonian nationalist
congress which is to meet in Greek guerrilla territory. An independent Lace-
dohian state will be proclaimed and portions of Yugoslavia will probably be
claimed as Macedonian territory.
3. Slovene Communist leaders in Carinthia have been conferring with functionaries
of the Austrian Communist Party and have decided to switch their allegiance
from Tito to the Cominforr::. Dr. Zwitter, the leader of the Slovene Communist
Party, visited Vienna between 7 and 13 March 1949.
4. Soviet agents in Austria, especially in the British Zone, are said to be
recruiting persons for an anti-Tito legion. Even former members of the Chetnik
and Ustaschi movements are being approached.
