Juan Philips,. former aide to Juan Vega, a Calderon supporter exiled in
Nicaragua, stated on 8 April 1949 that a Calderonista uprising would take
place in Costs Rica soonn However, he furnished no details. Vega in the
meantime has reportedly left for Mexico.
2 Captain Federico Starke, who fought throughout the recent Calderonista
invasion of Costa Pica as an aide to liafael Calderon Guardia, left on
5 April 1949 for Lima., Peru, on board the Peruvian ship Mantaro, as an
aide to Peruvian Army Marshal Eloy G. Ureta, former candidate for President
of Peru.*
- 3. According to source, Rafael Calderon Guardia appears to have abandoned politics
for the time being, and any new revolutionary attempt would be made by
25X1X6 Francisco Calderon Guardia in conjunction with ex-President Teodoro Picado.
Source believes that the Calderonistes are grasping at any straw available,
4. The amount of arms available to the Costa Rican exiles is dependent largely
on the attitude of Somoza, according to source. There appeared to be the
same amount as when the December invasion was started.

some help for the Calderon group, for Starke is a .bitter enemy of the present
regime in Costa Rica.
