The General Directorate of the Merchant Marine controls the following shipping lines s a. Yugoslav Shipping Line b. Free Yugoslav Shipping Line C. Adriatic Shipping Line d. Free Adriatic Shipping Lire 2. At the last meeting of the Higher Technical Council of the Ministry for f +ierch?ant Marine it was decided: J a. To merge the shipping lines at paragraph 1 (a) and (b) above b. To merge the shipping lines at paragraph 1 (c) and (d) ,above c-. To abolish the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine and to sub- stitute for it a newly constituted General Directorate of Ports and Warehouses with its own administration and Harbormasters, offices. The headquarters of the new General Directorate will be at Fiume and will control the Marit1me Sectors of Pola, Fiume, Susak, Buccari, Kraljevica and Sena. The Director General designate, Dragutin M,firosla?.?ce, will con- tinue to perform the functions of his present appointment as Director General of the Merchant Marine until the new General. Director%te takes over. ?. There is no Directorate of the Merchant. Marine at Split. Formation of such a Directorate never got beyond the planning stage because'of the projected transfer of functions described above. There will, however, be a Directorate of Ports and Warehouses at Split, of which the Director designate is Bonaci Juraj. It is not clear to what extent, if at all, the Director at Split will be subordinate to the General Directorate at Fiume. Notes on the four shipping lines listed in paragraph 1 above: a. Ships now under con- struction include: a) Yugoslavia: Four 1 ,000 ton MIS at the ' 3rd May" shipyard, Iuume. se ships were laid doom by the Italians during the war and their construction subsequently continued by the Yugoslavs. The ZAGREB and the SKOPJE have already been launched; the LJUBLJANA and the SARAJEVO are still on the slips. An four are due to be commissioned before the end of 1919. Since it has proved impossible to buy turbines, all four will be powered with 2,1100 h.p. Each has th- ee removable tanks and can therefore be used for other cargo at short notice. Speed 12 knots. Two were launched in March 1949; the other four are to be launched by August 19449. Three are to be ready for commissioning by the and of 1949 and the other three within the first six months of 1950. b) The iron MIS PECINA, sunk during the war, is being practically rebuilt at the 3rd May shipyard, Fiume. She will be powered by two 350 h.p. Diesels and is due to be commissioned before the end of 1949. c) The 650 ton M/S 4ARTINSIC, now nearing completion at-the Punat (formerly Aleksander) yard at Veglia. This ship has two 300 h.p. Mann Diesels, and will be commissioned before the end of 1949. d) The MIS EZINE, of 500 tons, is now being fitted out at Losinj. Engines have not yet been obtained. Except for engines she will be ready by August 1949. e) The 450 ton M/S ATHINIA, now under construction at Gherso, WE" be ready before the end of the year. Two 750 ton MS, the CETINA and the,IGRANE are under con- struction at Kraljevica. They are to be powered with 300 h .po Ansaldo Diesels and are to be commissioned by August 1949, g) In addition, there are seven small rN/S (tonnages less than 200) now under construction at various minor shipyards along the Adriatic coast. 6. In addition to the above shipping, now controlled by the General Directorate of the Mercha t Marine but soon to pass under control of the General Directorate of Ports and Warehouses, there is a large number of small codstal cr,-St of tonnages between 50 and 130 tons. This shipping is controlled on behalf of the state by two agencies, one at Fiume (headed by Captain Sime Smokrovic) and the other at Split (headed by a man named Stambuk). Between them these two agencies control the operation of some 180 vessels. A further 300 vessels are likely to come under their control when nationalization is extended shortly to all vessels of between 20 and 50 tons. IDfMJCONTFtOL ?
