Aircraft Catapult Equipment Plant at Nogaisk la Location: About two miles east of Hogaisk (46?44'N, 36?22'E)* and west of~penko, 330 feet south of the Melitopol-Nogaisk 2liariupol road; about 40 miles west of Lariupol. At the point where a road to the plant branches off from the highway, two signs with the inscriptions "To Nogaisk 2 miles" (to the west) and "To Eariupol 40 miles" (to the east) were seen. 2. Plant installations: See Annex 1 and legend. 3. History: The plant was formerly a shipyard where fishing smacks. and other small craft had been built up to 1942. The shipyard was destroyed during the war and had been rebuilt-by P!'rs as a catapult equipment plant since 1945. 4. Mana'ement and work force: It was known only that a Soviet engineer was the plant manager. SIX-Ey r,s and 400 Soviets worked in each of the two shifts. 5. Production: Catapulting apparatus (for details, see Annexes 2 and'3). The ca apu is were assembled in the assembly hall shown as item C on Annex 1. The catapults consisted of various profiles and had-a weight of 350 kg. There was a test and control station, where the compressed air cylinders were mounted and put under pressure, in the northern section of the assembly hall. A cylinder gauge indicated 120 atmospheres. The finished cylinder carriages and catapults were taken to the shipping point. Two or three trucks arrived every week to pick up the finished catapults. 6. Equipment: About 150 lathes, milling-machines, turret lathes, slotting and boring machines. B - Locksmiths shop: Manufacture of individual profiles and pipes and of individual parts from the compressed air cylinders; steel castings with walls 30umi thick, LCOOmm in diameter, 2.5m long. The piston rod had a diameter of 100nata and a length of 3 m. Equipment: t* lathes; one electrically operated saw; three milling machines; one small boring machine; two large boring machines; three carts with two bottles. each for autoganous welding. D - Launching site: A concrete apron about 6.6 ft above sea level. It was sti11 but was scheduled to be put into operation 25x1 A In 1949 . A pair of rails with gauge of about 1,50C= and 33 ft long was laid on the apron. A center rail served as guide rai], for the corresponding rail of the catapult device.
