REPORT NO.

The following report is. based on the translation of a report written by
$Llj -: ;..an (-9 ?), apparently a minor Communist worker, in Kwangtung _tc Province. The report was dated 8 ;.,ardua., and internal evidence indicates
that the year was 1947. It is possible that the unit referred to in the
text was connected with the East River Column. The report was submitted
to the Xai Yuan hong or one of its personnel or connections. ;'ortioas,
concerning details of business enterpr?i ces and personal difficulties have
been nutted, except where they appeared capable of shedding light on the
nature of his work, its location, or the writer's relationship to the
Chinese Communist Party.
Report on work during taast year, by :31:1 Lan 8 jardh.
1. Description of work done during last year.
After parting with the unit, my wife and I were at first sent to wore in :SX.
Our teens were to establish a base of cossm.unioations and to store up the
evacuated goods. tAc tried to maze z foothold by doing business and by
practicing midwifery, since nay wife had worked as a midwife for three years.
I asked the unit to pay me CbVC,4,50n0O0 as capital for business, and this fund
was brought to me by & U. I also took from the unit medicines to the value
of about iu l00. After arriving. a. found a store and prepared to start in
business selling native products from the Last River district. Later I was
told that it was unnecessary for me to rent a store for the medical business,
that I. could use the fund to carry on other business in order to support
ourselves, and that if we earned more than we had to spend the profit should
be turned over for public use. Then it was September 1945. S made arrangements
to open a butcher-shop to sell pork. I thought this business moat appropriate
in view of my financial circumstances; furthermore,, such a business would not
entail a complicated aftermath.
Almost half the capital was loot in two and a half months. elo closed the store.
I asked F'U for instructions as to what to do. Vie had to solve the problem of
occupation and support ourselves-

in December 1 found a job in the Chun no Tong*, a store operated jointly
with CHAS Tak-fai* and selling Chinese and foreign medicines. I worked
under the leadership of a person named SO* who assigned me the following
tasks: to maintain the store, to supply the unit with medicines, and to
take charge of the accounts and affairs of the store. The store was
opened on 10 January 1946.
Later, having left the store, I felt the threat of unemployment. Through
the recommendation of a friend, 1 found a place to live in a hamlet in Un
Long** where I could practice as a doctor. The year 1946 passed in this way.
2. General description and results of my life, work and learning in the past year.
Although for the greater part of the year 1 lived in peaceful cities, I
struggled rather hard against the throats of life-making. Ly work and
learning were handicapped by such threats.
Tie read publications such as the Hue Sham t'ao, Chem Pao and lasses, which
we deemed our guides in our thinking and work.
During the time we were in Un Long, I obtainod the friendship of the farmers
in the hamlet. 14ore than twenty farmers used to come to my room and chat
with me every evening. I used the news materials of the Rua Sham Pao to
discuss with them. Unconsciously we made the room a people's school. They
were deeply interested and full of hatred with regard to the collaboration
between the Kuomintang and the United States. Soon they regarded me as
their advisor, asking my opinion before doing anything. When I left the
hamlet, these farmers tried to keep nm there to teach their children. As
I had act registered, I dared not give them an affirmative answer.
I did not realize the importance of personal connections. I thought that by
relying on the insiders I could solve many problems. Indeed, I paid little
attention to outsiders. When problems arose and the insiders could not
solve them, I did not know what to do. I especially relied on organization,
without putting principal emphasis on self-help.
I did not respect the opinion of others regarding organization. I rushed to
do a thing before 1 received instructions, and I felt sorry if higher
authorities did not agree with what I did.
During the past year I made little efL.ort to review the work done and the
experience gained. Through laziness, I delayed writing my report until now.
It may be said that this is a kind of negative attitude toward the.. Party.
L:y concept regarding the Party was also weak.
J. originally planied to work in Un Long this year, but there was no guarantee
of earning a living. It was not enough to depend on medical work alone, so
I decided to do another kind of essential work and practice medicine only
secondarily. I chose teaching. A friend recommended me to teach at AX School
at XX village in XX district. This village has a population of over 600 and
the life of the villagers is rather poor. It is situated in a business (area ?),
surrounded by mountains but near the coast, and although its oomnunioations are
poor, its geographical position pleases me. 1 am planning to bring my wife and
child here so that nay wife can work in the women's movement. I have decided to
work for the following objectives:
