1, Source states that the plans for staginga. coup df?tat in Syria v.Thich
Trero worked .out by Lieutenant Colonel noshurne epu-y-Commander of the
Third Brigade, had no connection with the s'Alitary 0....2m which took place
on 19 Deember 19490 He states that:
Plans for the 19 Dember cou2 were dram up only a few days
prior to the action., althaTaa several- 5c'oups have been toying
with the idea for the past two months. The plot took shape
only when developments in the Constituent Assembly indicated
that plans for the union of Syria with Iraq were about to
become a serious threat.
bc, Lieutenant Colonel Dashur had no part in the earlier plotting&
of these groups, nor in the present coupe
c. Druze leader Aran Abu Assaf was in on the coup from As inception,
and there never was any reason to doubt thm favored the plans
Fawzi Silu, rather than lAbdullah Atfi, was the logical
replacement for Strii TIinnawi, since Silu is the highest ranking
enemy of Hinnavri and is IcloTei to be against union with Iraqoa
Source' adds that Adib Sbishakli was -a natural choice to lead
a22.1,s, inasmuch as it was his unit, the First Brigade, which
was needed to take over Damascus.
The reception given to leaders of the _cow by Hashin Atasi was stiffer than
e2pected, source states, and the Army If:r'ers accordingly protested more
strongly than they had 'intended that the military action was not an atterlet
to interfere in politics.
3 The suggested list of Cabinet member&81. was not drawn up by Arrry leaders,
but by a tinepublican League" fanned by the following deputies, who win '
work to become the now guiding influence in the Government: Aix= Naarani,
Sari Payarrah, Issan Uuhsjri, Ihsan
Id Isha.q, and ?Abd-al-Salan. Roder.: Ahmad Azza is the compromi'se leader
who has been asked to form the Cabinet*
