THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. The Czech pharmaceutical industry has been completely nationalized and has now
become the "United Pharmaceutical Industries, National Corporation" (Spojene
pharmaceutieke zavody, narodni poclnik). The druggists and private laboratories
are not allowed to produce any specialities, and any manufacturing licenses which
they already held have been taken over by the new national association. The
big druggists are also included in the association so that only the perfumories
remain in private hands,
2. Production of pharmaceutical goods is extremely limited. So--called factory
specialities are disappearing from the market, and only regularized pharmaceutice.],
specialities are to be produced in a total selection of about 300 kinds.
3. The market is in a lamentable condition, there even being, for instance, a lack
of aspirin, while rofein has entirely disappeared. There are also no supplies
of sympathol, adrional, lobelin, or aludrin, as these are products which the
Czech chemical industry is unable to manufacture, and which were being received
from Germany as reparations. Attempts made to produce sympathol in
Fragner factory in L;echolupy were a failure.
4. There is a complete lack of alkaloid, and the Association of Pharmaceutical
Industries is carrying out a strict collection of poppy fiber. There is no
production of aulfonamid.
5. The new nationalized pharmaceutical industry now employs about 6000 workers.

7, Changes in the leading positions in the pharmaceutical industry are so frequent
that it is impossible to give the names of the holders,
S, Scientific work for the chemical and pharmaceutical industrie is negligible,
since the men with the requisite ability have been dismissed because of their

9. The standard of the students in subnormal. Out of 1400 registered by the
Faculty of Natural Science in Prague in 1947' only l percent obtained their
degree in 19494
