1. The former Nationalist merchant vessel YUAN PET ( J z") is now armed
with wiz 100-mm long-range guns and four anti-aircraft machine guns. She
also carries radar, is camouflage painted, and to moored beside the wharf
between the Shan ;hat Soviet Consulate and the former Japanese Consulate on
described as an oil tanker, are moored in t.a vicinity of Naomiao NY
in Pootn g. Three Communist naval vessels are constantly moored at Iatatung
hsien (120-52, 32-02) an the north bank of the Yangtze.

China Merchants Steam Navigation Compsmya s Wharfs No. 8, at Chengchiapeng
Pootnng and No. 9, at Laopoto (X, i'J jJk- Q are used to moor
naval vessels. A large landing craft, equipped with three or four long-
distance guns, is at Wharf.No. 8, while three 2,000-ton landing vessels are
moored at No. 9. The vessels a ;re ? camovrflaged.

Two modern gunboats recently purchased from the Soviets 'aatrol the Yangtze
off Wusungkou (121-30, 31-21). The pa sage was blocked. comm)letely from
12 March 1950, and large junks and motor junks are not yet allowed to pass.

Fifteen thousand able-bodied men were selected from various units some time
before I April 1950 for training by the East China Military District at the
naval acaden r in Nanking. A cla=s of enlisted rev graduated from the academy
about the middle of March. Fifteen hundred of the graduated entrained for
Dairen to continue their training under Soviet direction.

Ton thousand naval uniforms were conpieted by Shanghai taat?.ore and clothes
workers by 25 March 1950.

25XTAwlaon Dockyards in early May 1950.

orte:d to be engaged in general traffic on the Yangtze River, while 11117 311
was not listed in
