1. `"he Shanghai United Engineer Construction Company was scheduled to complete
by the end of May at t tnghna Airfield a new ronway 90 meters wide and 1,800
meters long. It was anticipated that-construction, under Soviet direction,
would cost Jon Mira Pieo 700,000,0000

In intct-May the Shan hai Defense Corps had seven compat ies, each equipped with
four anti-aircraft guns. About 10,000 pounds of beef is distributed daily to
Soviet troops at Shan0ai airfields. Food for Shanghai foreigners is com-
mandeered from markets at Seymour Road, Race Course, and Hongkew.
In late May about 40 foa'mer CNAC and CATC employees arrived In Santsao (113- o
22-- ) to aid in the reconditioning of the airfield. Work includes the widening
of auxiliary zn2nweys and the construction of a radio station, warehouses, and
fuel tanks. The Xvangtung Water Conservancy Bureau has the dredge SHUX SHANE
to work- on the river bed near the airfield.
