It includes about 90 officers and 350 enlisted men. .fl the pilots are officers, mostly between twenty and twenty-eight years of age. About half the pilots were born outside Poland, either in the USSR, in the Baltic countries or in France. There seems to be a tendency to remove from the regiment all officers who entered the service prior to Vlorld d-,ar II,, and, these officers are engaged in administrative work. Pilots are well trained, bu?a enlisted men are poorly trained since their political education is emphasised 2, The 6th Regiment has been commanded since Day 1949 by Soviet Colonel Barshykov. H.; first deputy and political officer is Captain Jan Cerek. The post of second deputy and director of pilot training is temporarily held by the regimental navigator, Captain Antoni Janusop a Polish flier who entered the service prior to World tsar 11, 3. The regiment is organised as fol.lowss a. The regimental staff, headed by Soviet Captain Dziuda, of Polish origins is responsible for regimental intelligence, the regimental offices, sanitary services, and the regimental echelon, which is equipped with four 11,--2s for the use of the regimental corn nder, his second assistant, the regimental navigator and the chief of aerial gunnery. In addition, the regimental staff directs the four squadrons of the regiment, the liaison company ; the regimental guards company and ground staff, and the motor pool, which consists of three cars, eighteen motorcycles and twenty eight Soviet trucks. b9 The regimental supply group is composed of an officer in charge of clothing,, an officer in charge of provisions, another in charge of billets, an administrative officer and a paymaster. Under the supply group is a management company, The chief of the supply group is at present the clothing officer, c. The regimental engineering section is headed by Captain Corynov, a Soviet aviation mechanic. (eskadra zkadrobwana)a and the fourth echelon of each of the other squadrons have no planes. in reality, then., the regiment is composed of three active squadrons each of which has three active echelons. Each echelon is equipped with four planes. The regiment is equipped with 40 IL-2 planes which are faster and more maneuverable than the Spa-:10, though both planes have the same equipment. The IL-2 is equipped wish two 23-mm. Veya guns, two 7.620mm. Shkass machine gun.aa and from four to eight rockets, all of -which are fired by the pilot. The plane also has one 12.04?mn. U.B.T. heavy machine gun mounted in a turret and fired by a gunner. The planes carry either one 400-600 kg. bomb or two 250 kg. bombs. Late In 1949 the regiment received 10 Soviet IL-10 planes, but these are stored away and the regiment is not allow to use them. 5. Attachment A is a plan of the airfield of the 6th Regiment at Strachowice, 3.0 km vest of Wroclaw. The airfield., connected with Wroclaw by a good road,, is small., not modern and is filled in with slat.:. Since the entire field is herd surface., there are no special runways. On the north end of the field are wooden hangars and two large workshops. The entrance to the field is gi,.arded by small guard houses and a control house; the entire field is surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. In the northwest corner of the field is the airport used by LOT P a civilian airline. This section is isolated from the military f ield4, 6. The regimental commander lives in a building near the LO T. airport, while three be..srracks for troops are located on the extreme north and west sides of the f .eld. These barracks could house at least three times as ray soldiers as are now stationed at the field,. All officers and all married non-commissioned officers are quartered at the field with their families, and a special school has been established for their children. These quarters and the school com- prise five buildings on the vest side of the field.
