THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
The project of an auto..atic depth governor for submarines
was comp.,.eted bN, the Gema i irca, Berlin-Koopenick, in July
1949.. As the ship d,si-!niea; office (KB S) was stalled on the
construction of the four-cylinder gum:
~iae first experi-
mental devici4 was finished as sehoduled in early December
lc45,
2. The device proper was designed by Graduate Engineer Hoffmann,
who was formerly with the siemens Firs. as an expert on anti-
iollin
; devices in the shipbuiidiri field; he is now ,.tana-ing
1: 0
engineer with the aeme.
The device is intended to automatically keep the submarine at
a predesitnated depth, particularly at tho correct periscope
depth for firing. Oscillations of the submarine, for instance
in a seaway, are to be automatically counteracted by draining
or lettin, water into the tanks prior to any change of depth
o;? trim. This is caus?;d by the piston puma which - and this
is a new feature - works in two directio..a. `fns pump is star-
ted electrically. It also acts as a cater meter, as a definite
amount of water is forced up with each stroke of the pump.
An essential recsuir:.ment is that the gear meet the movements
of the boat in sufficient tLTe to prevent her from making any
pendulum oscillations.
4. Description bf the submarine depth governors
At low speeds the normal effects of divin,_ planes would not
uaffice to keep the boat firmly in position. Until nov,
e th was controlled by altering the weight of the boat,
(by flooding or draining regulating t:n_ter at low rates of
speeds - snor.:el speed and periscope depth). This procedure

is of particular importance at "zero" speed, in other words,
hen the boat is to float at a definite depth.
Compressd air has been used up to now for driving the steer-
ing mechJuiisr ,, In such cases regulating valves were actuated
according to the deviation from the desired depth and the
velocity of variation of the depth. If compressed air is used
the amount of through-flowing reluicting water Is not only dep
pendent on the seca.ona1. area of the valve but also on the
difference of pressure existin _ between the compressed air and
the vater pressure outboard. TL is difficult to clearly defi ac
the relation existing between the i'3-ova. ng velocity and the
sectional area. and With simple means it is imoossib.te. The
detemination of the velocity of the variation of the depth
is also difficult.
The new dept. governor is an integral steering;. gear. The
steering components which are used for actuating Lee re- gui.a-
ting valves are: 'file deviation from the desired depth, the
integral of this deviation in relation to time and the con-
-v eyed amount of water.
As the flowing velocity of the regulating: water is proportional
z,o the opening of the valve, the velocity of the tar cation of
depth is indirectly formed and is used as the amount of al.~ow-
arace for the stoerin.g.
The steering components can be made use of more or less, w .tri
ti-a result that the submarine makes for the prescribed depth in
a much clamped oscillation. Oscillograaphic dampin ; i obtained
by appropriate choice of the interpolation values,. In Lhi

The shape of the movement curve of the submarine is shown by
a differential ration of third dog e; part of its o nstEantsi
depend on the difference of pressure between the compressed
air arid the outboard pressure. The existence of this inter-
dependence means a handicap for the damping of the rnc, einents
of the submarine, the stability and the consumption of water.
For this reason the movement of the regulating water is no lon-
ger effected by compressed air, but by a piston pura:. This
piston pump, which is driven by the steering; motor, secures a
potitive connection between the p?. and
the velocity of the regulating lvat it independently of the
difference of i,re; sure which exists between the regulating
;eater tank and the outboard pressure. The number of revolu-
tions of the steering motor clearly indicates the amount of
r gulattiru water conveyed. he difference-of-depth pressure
meter indicates the deviation of the actual depth of the boat
from the prescribed depth. It works on the principle or a
deflecting o. hragmQ The deflection is transmitted to an elec-
trical indicator which supplies an alternating., voltage which
is proportional to the deviation of depth.

Differences of weight, such as those caused by the discharge
of a torpedo, are eliminated by ~n isodrome which ccnsl.yts of
a r'erraris integratinj motor and a rotary current transformer.
The Fta 9.s ?rnotor is steered by the electrical indicai:or of
the difference-of-depth pro:-sure meter and forms as a rotary
angle. the irate rrl of the deviation of depth in relation to
ti.:_te which is transformed into the appropriate voJtegc by the
rotary transformer." These two control components, multiplied
by the corresponding interpolation valued resu.Lti,at; fram the
stability conditions, cos respond to the amount of water to be
conveyed by the pump, the number of revolutions of the control
motor and the piston pump, respectively, control the amount of
rcL;ulatin water to be proved. I,. rotary transformer, rich is
coupled to the motor shaft., furnished this amount in the form
of volta; e. This is the third control comoonent. Thus it is
ra way control which ensures a more t osi give guidance of the
boat at the Prescribed depth. i characteristic feature of this
new depth governor, intended to improve the stabillzin,; and
damping qualities, is the flexible connection bet-vieen the motor
shaft and tale counteracting transfo:mer. It consists i,-X a
spring-controlled dwipin6 piston, w:,.ct3 causes an advance of the
control arrangement. This advance corresponds to a control
component ash: ch- is proportion=11 to the velocity of variation
of depth.

ado The desi, nee of this device is a well-kno-..n expert in Lac
field of anti-roliint devices for ships. In the case 011, t i :
automatic d p th governor the principle of such art anti--rolling
mechan smi has been a:,plied. The corttructlon of this design by
the soviets 'ndicates the principles they adopt in sub::narine
construction.
b. The piston pump .ill p resuaaabl meet be r. uirements for
noise-subdued renn.ning, 1r:e description, however, does not
indicate the magnitude of the deflecting forces, the power
requi red by the control dcvicesand the respective dimensions.
c. The whole device must undoubtedly cover comparatively wide
fields. It r;oulu therefore be important to find out what t -?-e
of submarine the device is intended for. r?: similar automatic
depth governor was installed in the German midget submarine;,
tvr>e "Soehund" (seal). but was only ufeant for c Fusin.
