Certain members of the Iron Guard? led by Costin Deleenu and Horia StamatuD
and including a large majority of the intellectuals in the movement,
consider that politically the Guard is airtually defunct? At the same time
they believe that, before it was "perverted" by the influence of Nazi
doctrines, the Guard gave expression to certain moral ideas. These so-called
"progressive" Guardists take as their ideal Ion Motza, a member of the Iron
Guard viho was killed while fighting with Franco in the Spanish Civil War.
Matza, they says, personified the man who is more interested in the formation
of a Christian personality than in politics. The "progressive" Guardists
believe that the purely political policies of the "reactionaries", led by
Iloria SiYnna,s, George). Deme7trescu and ProtopopescuD are doomed to failure.
The "reactionary" Guardists, on the other hand) do not consider the
"progressives" to be true members of the Iron Guard.,
