COUNTRv USSR (Tula Oblast) SUBJECT Capacity of Turbines in Power Plant at Aleksin RETURN TO CIA 25X1A LIBRARY 25X1X 25X1 A L. The statement in a previous report" that each of the taro turbines in the power plant at Aleksin has a capacity of 50,000 KWs is based upon remarks made by Soviet workers. This information has not bee 25X1A It is possible that Soviet workers who 1 A a total capacity of 100,000 MIS for the power plant had in mind its poten , a 20 It is seriously doubted that the capacity of the entire plant in 194:3 was 50,000 Js, even though this figure was mentioned in the "List of Power Plants, Status in 194414 Issued by the former German High Command of the Air Forces. According to the statements of repatriated German Ms., which appear to be in agreement, the power plant was destroyed during the war by the Soviets themselves rather than by the Germansa This must have occurred in 1941, during the German advance against Moscow before Tula and Aleksin fell to the enemy. At any rate, the first turbine was reportedly not in op erttion again before 1945 The evaluation of a German aerial photograph, dated 29 August 1942 (referred to- in t o "J4st of Power Plants, Status in 1944"), stated that the power x lanewas in full operation at that timed However, this is doubtful, since the photograph, 25X1 A fter the installation of the planned third and fourth turbinese this figure to apply to the two turbines actually in operation, thus arriving at a figure of 50,000 K s for each shows no produc i therefore probably refers to the status of the plant before the winter of 194]. when the turbines were installed in it m 25X1 A 4, It is entirely possible that in 1946 each of the turbines had a capacity ??5X1A 25X1 A 129500 K:3 as This the capacity of the turbines was to be doubled. eves the installation of a number of new boilers which may have increased the capacity of the turbines beyond 25,000 We.
