... On 22 July 1950 it was learned that all of the Volkspolizei unite in the Soviet
Zone of Germany are being equipped with new motor vehicles of a standard tote.
It was said that the Soviet Zone government was negotiating with the Czecho-
sloval:ian government for the purchase of Skoda motor vehicles. It is said that
the Volkspolizei is selling its present motor vehicles of various -types at re-
duced prices to civilian byyers because of the high cost of maintenance.
2, On 22 July 1950 an informant said that all drivers employed by the government of
Land Saxony were examined for service with the Volkspolizei. Seventy-eight of
140 were classified as physically, fit for police service. This measure was al-
legedly also taken in the other Laender of the Soviet Zone of Geruary.
Com wnt, Numerous reports on VP posts and west bound shipments of Soviet
trucks crossing the Oder Ileisse line substantiate the report of the increase in
motor vehicles for the Bereitschaftspolizei and Landespolizei.
