1. 'Beginning in late September 19508 underground dugouts were being constructed
as atomic bomb shelters in Peiping and Tientsin by order of the Chinese Coat:-
munists. On 1 October., conscripted civilians from Liaoning and Eastern
}Iopei assembled in Peiping to excavate dugouts around the Peiping city wall
under the supervision of Soviet advisors and technicians. The USSR is pro-
viding all construction materials, and the work is to be completed by the
end of 1950.*
2. between 10 and 12 October, six trains left Canton for Hankorr loaded with
35 armored cars, 42 trucks and jeeps, 20,000 pairs of rubber shoes, a
quantity of scrap iron, and other military supplies.**

the Hankow garrison; the 128 Division, 43 Army; was stationed alone the
Canton-IIankovr railroads from Chenghisien (1130, 34-45) to Iiartkow; and the
129 Division, 43 Army, was stationed along the Canton HIankow railroad from
Ch' angsha to Ilankorr.;s*.:r-
