1. In addition to the fortification of 1'ungao Island (113- , 22- ) , the
Chinese Co iunieets are fortifying Kaolan Island (113-15, 21-55), which
has a deep-water bay suitable for use as an anchorage. The I{wangtung
headquarters of the Chinese Communist Navy has recently sent higft naval
officials and Soviet advisers to Kaolan.
2. In the same area, a. group of about 100 marines from Stihampoa, equipped
with to cannon and four heavy machine guns, have been practicing land-
ing tactics using two gunboats and several junks.
3. On 2 October 1950, two Chinese Communist gunboats named. LI13ERATION3 NO. 1
and LIB] A ZONN NO. 2,, formerly anchored at tianchat (sic) across from
tiaOao, moved to the Fdamshan Islands.
4. In early October, eight gunboats which had been constructed at the P1aeroi
Shipyard at Foochow were sailed to Heiakang (sic), on the outskirts of
Amoy. These boats have wooden frames covered with steel plates painted
green
