14 Between 12 and 22 December., about 39000 Persons mere arrested in Canton
because they did not have identification papers during a census check up?
These persons are sus:)ected of being fifth columnists? Some have been
released after explanations about their pape,s, but many arc being detained
because of discrepancies in their statements. People in Canton believe that
these arrested persons will be turned over to the Army as recruits.
2.. About 20 December the Canton police seized the photographs of all the
members of the newspaper guild which existed under the ~~ationalist regime,,
Capics of those photographs have been issued to the Security Police,, as
these journalisio are considered enemy agents and subject to arrest. T o
narrsoaoerrren have been stationed at Shenchluan whose duty it is to alert
the police if any of these journalists return to Canton from Hong Kong.
