REPORT NO.
1. On 26 December 22,000 Chinese Communist troops arrived at Sangwon (126-06,
38-51) from Samdung (126-12, 39-00) with J470 civilians conscripted to carry
ammunition. The force had 85 Soviet trucks and Jeeps, 90 horse carts,
14 field artillery pieces of undetermined caliber, 150 80-tom. and 120-mm.
mortars, 20 anti-tank guns of undetermined caliber,, 40 HMG's, and approxi-
mately 60 IYG's.
20 The commander of the Chinese forces is SUN (), approximately 45 years
old; the deputy commander is HSU Yu-heiang (4 ,?,'f ), approximately
37 years old. The civilian in charge of conscriptinKorean labor is
SUI Wang-ch'ing (F ! ), approximately 40 years old.
3. These troops left Sangwon on the evening of 26 December, arriving at
Hwangju (12546, 38.40) on the morning of 27 December, One hour later
a Soviet officer of undetermined rank and tm, Koreans in civilian clothes
visited the commander of the Chinese force for half an hour in a house in
HwangJu.
4. The force arrived at Songhyon-ni (126-28, 38-04) on the morning of
30 December, with six trucks loaded with ammunition and food supplies.
The ammunition included Chinese Communist hand grenades marked June 1950,
The troops stated that the 120-mm, mortar shells in this shipment were made
in the USSR in September 1950. The force arrived at Changdan (126-116,
37-56) on the morning of 31 December, deployed for an offensive, and advanced
to Hapo-ri (126-b8, 37-56)
5. The Chinese in charge of Korean troops told them to bear their present
hardships patiently since the Chinese Communists would bring a better world
by liberating Korea by the end of February 1951, then taking Cheju-do and
Taiwan.
6. On 31 December there were 1,300 North Korean infantry troops on a plateau
northwest of Changdan and a Korean heavy mechanized company totaling 304
troops on a plateau to the northeast of the town,
