During the summer of 1950, troops from S-)ror1borg, Cottbus, and Cahlau, with a total of 120 tanks, practiced in the training area at Nochton (0 52/.A. 73). They had been quartered in about 320 one-story wooden barracks which were scattered over the area west of the Nochten P,oxberg road. .-ach barracks building eras capable of gusrterin, about 60 men. 2. On 28 November, the barracks next to the road were occupied by about 200 u'L , wearing red bordered black epaulets, and some officers. The soldiers were engaged in the construction of 60 winterized barracks and a board fence about 21 meters hi? ki, along the eastern border of the cantonment which follaas the Nociten-Poxberg road. v -)muent. The statement that troops from Cottbus and Spremberg had been there in the suimaer confirms previous reports on the departure of components of the 9th Mecz Div from the Nochten training area to their home stations in October 1950. Vince there has been no in- formation on any Soviet troops in Cahlau, Cahlau may have been con- fused with Luebbon, the third rdlitary post of the 9th Lutz Div. According to the peacetime T/0, a mechanized division has about 155 tanks.
