The demonstration in Aleppo on 20 December 1950 in which a crowd of 3,000
students and youths demanded the abolition of foreign concessions,
particularly the French Regie des Tabacs, was originally planned by the
student section of the Hizb al-Ba'th al-Arabi (Arab Resurrection Party),
However, the demonstration was exploited by the Aleppo Regional Committee
of the Syrian Communist Party, which, in addition to instructing its
student section to take part, arranged for several of its "strong-.arm"
men to mix with the crowds and incite them to create disturbances.**
