1. It was learned on 10 February that a boviet unit stationed in
:uissenfels recently placed four T-34 tanlx at the disposal of the
Volkepolizei.
2. On 3) January, .r.)oviet Lieutenant Colonel Vangalov, (fnu)
together with German VP officers, inspected the
iormer en -ineer training site on the aale River to determine its
suitability for VP traiairli; purposes. Vanalov was heed of the 5oviet
liaison staff with the VP Bereitschaft in -leiesenfels and wore a VP
uniform. Tho leases of German email land holders in the area of the
engineer trainiag site were renounced without notice Ly-::eissenfels
municipal authorities on 10 January.
3. In February, the VP Bereitschaft in -:eiseenfels nuMbered about 1,530
police. The unit trained UCOs and company-rade officers who, having
camoleted an 8 to 12-week infantry training course, were reassigned
to other VP posts. Graduates were transferred to Pots:a, .1 Schwerin,
Torgau, :a:deburg and, in early Februery, to Eeiningen. if' About 25 V?
officers holding a rank equivalent to that of a second lieutenant
arrived at the VP pereitschaft from Prora on 15 February. The municipal
adminietration of ..:eiusenfels ordered the local housing office to
provide 75 apartments for VP officers in February,

attached to Lieutenant Colonel Vangalov's liaison staff with the V2
Bereitschaft in ,eissenfels were changed aaer a short period of
training, apparently receiving appointments at other VP posts. 1;ix
officers who arrived between 1 and 15 February hay! VP uniforms tailore'A.
The officers on Vangalovis staff received 3erman language instruction,
the second larvuace course having started on 15 February. The instructor,
a German VP Oberkommissar, emphasized the learning of German technical
terms pertaining to weapons, equipmentyand vehicles, and terms relative
to interrogation and report techniques.

Comment, The location of a new VP Dianststelle (VPD), organized
into th?tal four Kommandos and seven Sonderabteilungen, in the barracks
installation of the former 5th VP Beroitschnft on zeitzerstrasse,
Leis, was previously reported, The statement in
the present report that the organization is an infantry training unit
conducting 8 to 12?week courses is therefore discredited. The reassignment
of officers and NCOs probably referred to the time when the former 5th VP
Bereitschaft was deactivated,
Comment. The departure of units of the 7th Ode Litz Rifle from
Weissenfels for field exercises was observed in early Larch 1951.
However, joint exercises.byboViet units and German VP
personnel nave not been observed and appear imOotabIe so shortly after
the reorganization of the Volkspolizei. -
