By an order Issued on I Decerber 1950 by the TTinist of AT?tional Defense (sic), s cial border guard units suborlinated to the T1inistry of Interior -,.acre organized to seal the Czech-Gerr^an border and prevent illegal border crossings. The new units, are orrranized as brigades with a total strength of about 2,000 nen each, So, far, brigade headizarters have be in identified at Volary, Plana and Cheb. Each brigade consists of eight battalions of five co: raniee. The boarder units are manned by soldiers in their second year of conpuleory training, taho receive a special course of training, before being as ,igned to border guard duty. Over half of these nen are Slovra'.. ab The training courses are of two to three nonths dura- tion and are given at brigade hea'Iquarters. They consist of political education and ',raining; in border guard duties. Each non 3s arr?ed with a sar,bna- chine -an -rith to clips, a 7.65 -n r~istol with tr>o clirs and one "kola hand grenade. The sub- r~ac'iine guns are of various crakes at present, but an effort is boin radio surely all units with new Czech submachine ryuns. 2.
