,r Approved For Release 2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP82-00457R007900290 CLASSIFICATION er prnv (Soviet Zone) COUNT Y C TOP`S; Uranienburg Airfield EVALUATION gee below DATE OF CONTEN DATE OBTAINED REFERENCES PAGES- REMARKS SOURCE 25X1 C 25X1X 1. On 18 April 1951 about noon, individual twin-jet aircraft circled over the Bernau (N 53/Z 96) area at an altitude of about 800 meters. Description of the aircraft is as follows: Wings fitted between the nose and tail when seen from below at a angle to the rear, wing tips squared-off, engines about half as long as fuselages and almost as thick as the fuselage, fuselage not pointed at tail but rounded, elevator assembly set high, leading adges swept back. (1) 2, On 19 April., there was no flying at the Oranienburg airfield because of wind and rainy weather. The Germendorf-Oranien- burg railroad line had a spur track which led to the northern edge of the field. The siding branched off, one track led to the south and the other to the east. A fuel container, similar to a large railroad tank car, was mounted on a brick pedestal about 2 meters high, just north of the branch track leading to the east. Soviet soldiers were seen in camouflaged trenches along the road which ran on the northern edge of the field. They checked passing civilians. Passenger cars 25X1C latter occupied by six air force officers, and truck were seen at the entrance to the field. 25X1 C 3, On 22 April, there was no flying between 1.0 a.m. and 4:30 p,m. except for one biplane on a local flight. The weather was good. The following features were observed on about 30 jet bombers parked at the field; Two jet engines in the wings, close to the fuselage, projecting more beyond trailing edge of wings than beyond leading edge, engine tapering to the rear, air intake and air exhaust covered with red protect- ing caps, cockpit in front of wings elevator and rudder assemblies similar to those of hli -15 plane, nose wheel, CUSSIFICATION COrdT OFFIC Y C per ,.,. No antennas were seen. Some aircraft were painted silver, others dark olive drab. High ladders were seen leaning against several planes. (2) 4. A Dumbo radar set, about 10 meters high was located on the eastern edge of the field, directly on the bank of the canal. It rotated in one direction at irregular intervals. (3) The exact course of the runways could not be determined. A new runway was probably under construction on the western edge of the field, since about 30 laborers were digging there and two steam rollers were in use. (3) 6. On 21 April between 3:30 and 7 p.m. about 1.5 twin-jet aircraft were parked at the field. The planes had a nose wheel, and a cockpit on top of the front section of the nose? The shape of their rudder assemblies s similar to that of the jet fighter with swept-back wings. A dark two-digit number was seen below the red Soviet star on the upper section of the rudder assemblies. Some planes had a dark brown cover. The exact number of aircraft could not be determined since the planes were arranged in such a way as to cover the least possible parking space. 7. Three radio installations were seen at the field. One radio installation, a Mumbo radar set, was located in the north- eastern corner of the field. It did not rotate during the time of observation. Two wooden huts were west of this radio installation. A cable, connected to the power transmission lines at the Oranienburg-Berlin highway led to the instal- lation. (4) The second radio installation was in the eastern section of the field, between the canal and the runway. There was a mast about 8 meters high from which a single antenna led to another mast, about 6 meters high. A wire led from the higher mast to a radio cabin. The third radio installation, which consisted of four braced metal masts about 6 meters high, was located south of the second installation,in the eastern section of the field. The masts were Interconnected by a single antenna. In the middle of the square of toasts there was a wooden but about 2 meters high. A vertical rod about 2 meters long protruded from the northwestern corner of this hut. No wires were seen leading from the masts to this rod. 9. The westernmost section of the field was being rolled. Two tank trucks without numbers were parked north of the hangar. (5) On 23 April, at least six twin-engine jet bombers flew over Oranienburg between 7 and 11 a.m. The planes were consider- ably slower than jet fighters with swept-back wings. (6) 10. On 24 April, six twin-engine jet bombers were parked in front of the assembly shop at the field at about 10 a.m. Two of the.planes were covered with gray-green tarpaulins. No numbers could be seen on the aircraft from a distance of about 500 meters. Many conventional aircraft were parked in the area northeast of the hangar. There was no flying. 11. A Dumbo radar set about 10 meters high was emplaced on the northeastern edge of the field, about 30 meters west of the canal. A factory installation located north of the field in the triangle formed by the railroad line, the road, and the canal was occupied by Soviet Air Force troops. Many officers and EM were seen entering and leaving the factory. _ en g. (1) For source's sketch of plane seen from below, see Annex 1. The aircraft are probably assigned to a unit stationed in Oranienburg. It has not been determined whether these planes belong to a new unit or whether the bomber regiment equipped with PE-2s aid previously stationed in Oranienburg is being re-equipped with this new jet aircraft type. The latter assumption is believed more probable. (2) For source's sketch of plane seen from the side Annex 1 and for his location of Dumbo radar set, see Annex 22, 25X1A (3) Paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 contain supplementary information to (4) This set was set up at about the same time that new e aircraft arrived in Oranienburg. No Dumbo set was observed before, (5) The auxiliary antenna on top of the but indicates that the radio installation is probably an Adcock DF.
