The movement of elements of 18 out of the 22 motorized rifle., mechanized, and tank divisions in the Soviet Zone of Germany from their military posts to troop training grounds was virtually completed by the end of April 1951. During the first half of I.iay the Volume of troop movements in the Eighth Gds Army area was still great, wh? le rail movements in the other army areas. involved only a few units moving from their posts to the troop training grounds behind schedule. Reports from the military posts indicate that the bulk of the units, with their equipment, moved to the troop training grounds, leaving behind in the installations only rear c*tails, some of which consisted only of young troops. During the first half of May. .1951, the troops at the training grounds were engaged primarily in preparing their quarters, but prouaoi r still during May, took up combat practice at platoon and company level. Specifically, reports on the occupation of the troop training grounds which were received between 1 May and 1 June 1951 indicate the followings ao Eighth Guards Am Area. OIIRDRUF: The billeting area betweeh OHRDRUF and ORAVIII:'KEL was heavily occupied in mid-May. Most of the motor vehicles observed there belong to headquarters units of the XXVIII Gds itm Rifle Corps and to components of both the 39th Gds Mtz Rifle Div, and the 20th Gds Iiecz Div. Although motor vehicles of the twO divisions subordinate to the XXIX Gds Utz Rifle Uorps wereobserved in the OIIRDRUF area, it is fairly definitely believed that primarily tie two divisions of the XXVIII Gds Utz Rifle Corps are located at the CHRDRUF troop training grounds. In addition, headquarters artillery and signal units of the Eighth Gds Army from V EB AR moved to OHRDRUF during April 1951. However , the 220th Iiv Tank SP Regt of the Eighth Gds Army, which remained at 0HRDRU?' throughout the summer of 1950, was still at its post in GLAUCIIAU by the end of April 1951. 25X1 C Reports of May 1951 from the EIS NACIY KI `DEL area are not specific enough to disclose the identity of the units there. They only indicate a heavy occupation of the cask, at 11OLFSBEff-I'tlN1GE T and west of DT'h1 HAUSE I. However , it is believe( that the tui.k of the 57th Gds I:tz Rifle Div is at KIItDEL, since troops of the division from NAUMBURG and C EISS E EELS departed westwards by rail at the end of April and during the first half of May 1951. According to other reports mid-April 1951. iio evcjr, it is believed that theyv were only minor components of the division, since the bulk of the 21st Gds Ifiecz Div participated in an engineer exercise conducted in the Amt area from 6 to 17 May 1951. BAD KOESEN: 25X1 C Vehicle reported from BAD KOISEH during April. 19 1 belong to headquarters units of both the Eighth Gds Army and the XXIX Ode Mtz Rifle Corps and to components of the 57th ads Mtz Rifle Div. 25X1 C 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/04/15: CIA-RDP82-00457R008000810010-7 Approved?F ase - - ~QQW00810010-7 C MM L 111TI ,LIC t P A&LI1CT 25X1A b, Third Shock Amy Area. () The, 7th and loth Ode Tank Divs moved to Letzling Heath during the second half of April 1951, probably occupying the camps in the woods at BOO and PI a o in addition, some component units of the 1st Aecz Div and headquarters units, probably artillery units, of the Third Shock Army are belied to be in this area. In the northern. portion of the training area, the camp south of 1311`I2112 DAW yes r_4cu a.ed but Camp UCHTSPIINGE 25X1 C was still vacant on 23 . anal.yuas indi- cates that Camp U OTTUMORF probably quarters a ents of the 207th l tz Rifle Div,, a mixed unit of the 18th Meez Div., and elements of the 136th Gds By Tank ST' leegt of the Third Shock Amy from BURG. While elenents of the 207th li-tz Rifle Div practiced in the S NDAL area in late April and during the first half of May 1951, units of the divi pion were probably rotated to the nor- thern portion of, Letzling Reath for combat practice with live ammunition in I 1951. Troops of the 13th !ecv. Div with tanks and artillery piecea, who were secy, on two trains in the STE AL area cis=ring the first half of May 1951, came from, the WITTSTOCK troop training grounds. They probably left the WITTSTOCK area only temporarily to hold joint f'i.eld exercises with other elements of the Third Shock Army. The component units of the, 19th Gds eez Div in HITZER.>a}AB1 N were still at their quarters in early May 1951. They are believed to conduct their sum ier training in the southern portion of Letzling Heath., from their permanent q masters, Reports from P GMEBURG indicate that the divisional units there left the post in mid-April 1951, ?obably going to Letzling Heath, PreA.ous conclusions as to a major concentration of troops at Letzling Heath have thus been substantiated. * There have been no reports of any kind, including reports on rail movements, which would indicate that the concentration of troops in this area serves 25X1 C aray purpose other than that of summer trainni.nga (2) Troops with tasks and rocket launchers vaor(. loaded in SCIII~IN on 25 April 1951, with the rocket launchers. being dispatched to JU1,TJ RBOG. 'urther elements of the 944th ads Utz Rifle Div and headquarters units of the IX Utz Rifle Corps departed by rail during the first days of May and by road. from 3 to 12 May 190.0 with the troops moving by road heading southeast. Since there have been no reports on the arrival of these units at a troop trraining grounds, it is possible that the troops moved to the JIFF J Df3Ft , area., southeast of. T,2ements of the l th Mecz Div were confirmed at the Zt71STOCK troop training grounds until mid -May 1951. Tank and artillery troops of the division were loaded at the DRAPE railroad station at the beginning of i`ay 1951 and, according to donfirmed reports, sere hied from the ST.11DAL area to Letzling heath, The observation 25X1 C of the 94th Gd Mtz Rifle Div at WITTSTOCK oes no necessarily Triply that units of the division are also sta- tioned there. Except for the signalbattalion of the 12th Gds Tank Div which left for field training at the end of April 1951 and did not return by the middle of ray- 1951, the units of the 9th and 12th &s Tank Divs remained at their quarters until the riddle of y 1951 and showed no signs of a forthcoming departure. Troops of the 1st tecz Div left for Letzling Heath on tt trains at the end of April 1951. It appears that the units moved vir- tually their entire equipment to the training area, but left some of their personnel behind at the respective posts of VJITTENBERG and J1)ET 'RB iG?-ALTFS LAGER to continue training. Troops of the unidentified AAJ: Div of the GOFG, possibly the 32d, from FRAiu'ICEtIRT Oder an? v^ed at JUL Ei3I30G aboard one train on 11 April 1951. 25X1 C 25X1 C this unit were still. observed in JUETERBOG on 21 .p ements of the division from KUE'STRIN had moved to JUETERBOG for a three week's training as early as March 1951. * Troops on a total of sip trains from Eli'?:.SWAI,I;E, Ft t; ?.STEllti7AI,DE, TEXPLIN, LIJPBEROSE, and WETSS1rASSFU arrived at JUETERBOGALTES LAGER about 20 May 1951. The troops, whose identity could not be established, may have been rocket launcher units of the divisions of the Third and Fourth Gds Lem Armies which came to the JUI.'7"4B0G troop training grounds for special firing practices as they did in 1950. WEISSI'mSSE,Rs The elements of the 9th Hem Div were still in Gamp NOCHTEN, south of V EISS','rASSER, in mid-44V 1951. Since from 12x,000 to 15,000 troops seem to be quartered in the OTEISSu1AaSE@R training area and since reports by several sources from this area mentions 25X1 C 25X1 C may belong to the Northern Group of Force. it is possible that small unitstrom Polish-occupied Germany are participating in the summer training of the 9th Mecz Div. however, this still r equires confirmation, since there have been no reports on troops crossing the Idoisso River by rail or road. :f, Fourth Guards echanized ~r Ares, TE PLIN: The movement of the elements of both the 6t 1lecz Div and the 25th Tank Div from their posts to tII ___ oop training grounds 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/04/15 : CIA-RDP82-00457R008000810010-7 Approved-For Release 2004/04/15 : CIA-RDP82-00457R008000810010-7 3~RI:T/I CE 71 BAL 12 LLIGE E AT 25X1A was completed at the and of April 1951. Reports from the WUSTROW AAA range were not specific on the activities of the: t s there and contained no leads to establish their identity. 2515X1 C However, in addition to elements of six AAA dividions 1cler-11 a here as early as March 1951, there were also elements of the 265d Gds AM Re *t of the 14th Gds AAA Div in April 1951, 25X25X1 C and, units of the uniden-y i;ified AAA Div, poss s, ? n ear y y 1951. Elements of the 6th Arty Div from the RATMIOVI area, components of the unidentified artillery division from POTiSPAM, and the unidentified AT Arty Brig, possibly the 3d (ids, from BERWJ3URG and BI D DRG were confirmed at ALTI=OIGRABOil between 1 and 10 May 19 .. Periodic reports indicate that the bulk of the brigades of the 6th Arty Div in TIIr 1 but only one brigade of the artillery division in PO'TSDAIsi, namely that stationed in the barracks instalia&tons in WILDPARX-17est and 00114.9 moved to ALTf +s~GRA 0t`i during the second half of April 1951. The 30th Gds Gun Arty Brig in the Delius Kaserne, POTSD.AM, was still at its quarters in mid-May 1951. By mid- y there were no indications that the artillery component of the 6th Arty Div in the Geaheralfeldzeugmeister Kaserne, BWIDE'LBIIRG, was preparing to depart. at ALTENGRABOW in late April and early May 1951 included ose o the 4,14 (Gds) Gun Arty Brig of the Eighth Gds Army; the unidentified AAA l.v, possibly the 32d, of the WFG; and some of the 94th Gds Utz Rifle Div and the wi.dentified AAA Division of the Third Gds Mecz ArrV. The troops arrived and left by road and rail. On the basis of information from the loading and unloadint; stations, the approach roads, a.:ad the training area proper, it Was conclw ed that army units participat- ing in the exercise probably were ne;aaquarters units of the Eighth Gds Array and its two motorized rifle corps, including engineer, artillery, and AAA troops; the bulk of the 21st Gds ? ecz Div from HALLE; an .engineer unit of the 57th Gds Mtz Rifle Div- a headquarters engineer unit of the Third Gds Mecz irnr; the 36th Pon Bridge Iegt of the GOFG from ROSSLAU; components of the unidentified engineer regiment of the G?FG from POTSDAM; components of the unidentified Mort Brig, possibly the 65th, of the 6th Arty Div, probably from ALTEtO ABOW; and motor transport units of the GOFG. Officers of the Second and Fourth tads Metz Armies seen there probably attended the exercise as observers. The exercise is believed to have beean conducted from south to north across the Elbe River. Three bridges were constructed between RIFT" K. and BMMBACH and were sub- sequently crossed by elements of the 21st Gds Mecz Div. Some shipments of the ammunition arriving in the training area indicated that the troops probably used live ammunition in the crossing operation. Those elements of the 21st Gds iecz Div which participated in the exercise possibly returned to HATS for only a few days and left again westwards, probably !or the KD DEL troop training grounds, ' about 20 May 1951. Small groups of recruits arrived at RATilFl (W in April and early May 1951. Soldiers on seven boxcars arrived in the .soviet Zone of Germany via KUFSTItIN on 20 May 1951. A forthcoming turnover in personnel was indicated by several measures, including the preparation of quarters in the barracks installation at BAD FREME VALDE on and after 25 May 1951; the movement of trains from BF ,IN LiCHTT , r ERG to RATIIE C T, 1LDPARK, and JU rERBOG on 20 May 1951 having shuttle--train numbers of the lxx F series and consisting Of about 50 empty boxcars suitable ror rare long-distance transportation of troops; and the passing,, through KUE?;STR.IN, of an empty troop train bound for 11.1. FRBURC on 20 May 1951. It is possible that? under this replacement program, the remaining contingents of the 1927 class will be shipped to the TI.S.3.R. for demobilization while recruits of the 1930 class and some of the 1931 clan:, who were inducted in the U.S.S.R. in the spring of 1951, 25X1 C will arrive in the Soviet Zone of German.,,, 6.
