SOURCE
1. On 8 May 1951, Soviet troops were observed constructing a tent camp in Fonterdoe
(Font Forest), at Bocsa, about 8 km northeast of Soltvadkert (Y 6/N 62). Local
residents said that the men made up a Soviet division. According to a Soviet
officer, the troops required 7,000 to 8,000 liters of water daily.
2. Sixty- 5--ton Diesel trucks and 5 x 3-ton Ford vehicles were seen at the camp.
Weapons observed included 15 AT guns of about 50-mm with barrels about 3 meters
long, without muzzle brake, and wheels with rubber tires; 16 light mortars
with a barrel about 1 meter long, which were carried over the shoulder; 16 mor-
tars of about 100-mm with a barrel about 1.20 meters long; and 16 guns of
about 100.mm. with a four-baffle muzzle brake, gun shield, pneumatic recupera-
tor, cradle, split-trail carriage, and wheels with rubber tires.
Each of the last two trucks was occupied by a
platoon o soldiers wearing .ed bordered black epaulets with crossed-gun-barrel
insignia and car, ying submachine guns. These last two trucks towed a mortar
of about 100-mm with a barrel about 120 cm long and wheels with rubber tires.
Consent. The soil in the Bocsa region is sandy and hardly practicable
for motor, vehicles in dry weather. The unsurf'aced roads are most favorable
for motor vehicle traffic after a light rainfall. Visibility is poor and
limited to a radius of several hundred meters because of the many small woods.
Many small dairy farms (Tanya), which We adobe buildings with tiled roofs,
are scattered over the area. The woods consist mainly of acacias which were
planted about 40 years ago to prevent erosion of the sandy soil. 'fells in
the area are very shallow and the drinking water is potable only for the
natives.
Co:gnment. The training area in. the Bugac-Bocsa area, 8 to 10 km north-
east of Soltvadkert, is probably used by components of the 2d Gds Mecz Div for
summer training. All motor vehicle number series mentioned in the present
report belong to this division.f For a sketch of the troop camp, see Annex.
