In accordance with the terms of the Polish -Chinese Trade Agreement of
January 1951, steps have been taken to form a Polish-Chinese Shipping
Company, which will operate about 32 ships.* Two officials of the Polish
Maritime Administration, Poi= and Choynowski were in China during the
spring of 1951 to direct the preliminary work. The Polish-Chinese Shipping
Company has set up an office under the management of Olgierd 50X1-HUM
Sledz? who formerly worked with the Gdynia Line\
2. Two officers of the Polish merchant marine, Captain Jerzy Nierojewski and
Chief Engineer Jozef Belczowski, were recently in China in connection with
the organization of the Polish-Chinese Shipping Company. The chief difficulty
at rre sent is the shortage of crews. According to the Polish-Chinese Trade
Agreement the crews are to consist of both Polish and Chinese. Shipping
agencies for the line have not yet been set up,.
3. The Polish crews sent to China to operate six Chinese coastal vessels of about
1,200 tons under charter are to return to Poland. They consider it impossible
to operate the vessels without a Communist naval escort because of Chinese
Nationalist naval and air activity.**1'
