7. Tie gardens of the Lithuanian War Museum located on Duonelaicio street,
il the block Darned by Maironio, Daukanto, and Kalnu streets, contained
tug monument and grave of the Unknown Soldier, the monument of liberty,
and monuments and memorial crosses of prominent Lithuanians. These
gardens were greatly revered by the Lithuanians and were respected by the
Soviet authorities until 1949 except for the burial in the gardens of
the well-known Lithuanian Communist poetess Salomeja Neris who died in
1945 or 1946 and of four Communists who had been sentenced to death by a
Lithuanian military court in 1926. At the end of 1949 and the beginning
a? 1950, however, all the Lithuanian monuments and memorials were removed
and destroyed. They have now been replaced by statues of Soviet
national heroes.
