CENTRAL I'1TETJJGI ICE AGIIICY
The crews of both these vessels have no clcar idea of their duties. They
have been told of_icially that their main duties are rescue-and salvage work
which includes the raising of sunken objects. Occasionally# this work may
include the salvage of torpedoes. At present.4 their main activity is practice
navigation in the vicinity of 1Ugen. Th are also to check merchant vessels
in the vicinity, especially those of registry. This is considered
important since fishing cutters from North Sea ports are known to have run 50X1-HUM
into Sassnitz to sell their catches ann. refuel, The activity of the two
vessels mentioned above is not restricted to coast patrol and recovery duties,
however. In Uayr 1951, Zillich and the two engineers from the VON DER LUT1
and the SERGER I sailed from Sassnitz on the BERGER I to Paraw where one of
the engineers wont ashore on a confidential mission,, After this man returned
to the MERGER I$ the vessel made contact with a ship at sea and 50X1-HUM
packages of pamphlets were loaded from the BERGER I onto the ship. In July
1919 the VON DER LUTE was used for a similar mission.
