Two keels are to be laid this year for two 2,000 BRT freight ships.
The original program called for the keels to be laid in August. The
date is now undetermined as the two waje on which the keels were to be
laid, are still under construction and will not be completed until
Septe:'ber or October.

but the majority from the East Zone, Only in very special
cases is steel from the USSR imported,., and this is usually in the form of
steel tubes. Most of the machinery and materials for 1*g,:er construction
comes from SAC or VEB factories in the Russian Zone. Most electrical equip-
ment comes from the VEM and one of the biggest problems at the moment is the
supply of coapassesa which at present come from the Askania works in Berlin.
The Askania compasses are very poor and considered useless so other sources
of supply are being sought
