Panevezys military airfield., located 2 to 3 km west to southwest of Panevezys (55oI 'N/2).t.?2 2'E), Lithuanian S .S.R., and 2 to 3 km south of the railroad line leading from Panevezys to Siaul.y:ai (> '='ri6t1[~23?181E) was built bf,fore the war. The field, situated on level tEer:rain., can be extended to all sides. The E--W dimension of the field was about 2 km. Thou landing field had a firm grass cover. No taxiways were observed. There was arl.E-W runway. The length of the runway was about the same as that of the 1"ield. No aircraft revetments were seen. boundary lights were apparently availabeL.e. ?. Buildings at the field included. a red 'our--story barracks buil.dingt about ; meters long., which had been gutted by f'::re,,, on the northern edge of the field; and four or five low wo?den buil.dinfgs, each 20xh0 meters., east and west of the barracks building. The low vocxien. f uildirgs were occupied by aoviets, allegedly pilot candidates. The field was occupied by 20 to 30 twin-en;;ine aircraft with sin-le rudder assemblies and engines which projected. considerably far beyond the leadin edges of the wings, Flying was practiced in for?raations of four to five :)lanes after individual take-offs. The larg .t .formation observed consisted of 20 .-)lanes. No parachuting or firing was o'b:>er,ded. An air force headquarters and air force officers were allegedly quartered in a four-story building., called ~e.publikas Gatro, in Panevezys.
