1. The militia unit at Ivailovgrad numbered approximately 120 men and was
housed in a building on the main street. Its commanding officer was
Captain Karaivan.
2. During May 1951 machine gun emplacements were constructed west of
Iv'ailovgrad.
3. The Ivailovgrad sanitarium was located on the eastern edge of the city
in a three-story building which had 80 beds and a staff of two doctors
and two nurses. In 19118 construction was begun on a four-story hospi-
tal, but was suspended because of a shortage of materials.
Ii,. All the young people in the village of Ledzha have been enrolled in
the Civil Air Defense Organization. Ledzha's unit is led by Dimitri
Dobrevs a Communist. The uniforms which have been issued to the youths
have dark gray capes and dark gray trench caps. All the young men in
the organization carry old Bulgarian rifles (sic).
In Ledzhay the secretary of the Communist Party was Ivan Todorov, who
was also in charge of propaganda for the village.

f' of Stara Zagora, held approximately 300 political and other prison-
ers, The structure was surrounded by a wire fence three meters high
and was guarded by a militia unit of 40 men armed with sub-machine
guns.
